Tell us a little about yourself (eg. where you grew up, a little history, family):
I grew up mostly in southwestern Minnesota in a family with 5 boys and me, the only girl. My mother was a self-taught musician who nurtured a love for singing among her children. I always participated in both band and choirgrowing up, but I was also an athlete, playing volleyball, basketball, and running track all through high school. Thanks to my Dad, I have a deep interest in history, civic engagement, and working hard.
What has called you to this work?:
When I was in middle school and high school, I used to put my older brothers' high school choir records on the turntable and practice conducting. When I went off to college, it was to major in music. I attended Saint Olaf College, majoring in Vocal Music Performance (B.M.) and went on to get my Masters degree at the University of MN in Choral Conducting. I think that the magic of singing together has been such an integral part of who I am that I have always found a way to share that with singers of all ages. Currently, I also direct a choir of senior citizens at Johanna Shores Senior Living Community in Arden Hills. I believe everyone has a voice, and it's important to nurture that gift whatever age you may be!
What have you enjoyed the most about your time at MWS so far?: I really love that the students get so much time outside, and take turns doing chores that help to sustain the chickens, the garden, and the school building itself. I've been learning more and more each week about the value of a Waldorf education, and that's been helpful for me in getting to understand how best to support the students. I also see that our Classroom Teachers are amazing role models for their students. And finally, I just really love hearing these students SING!
What are you currently working on with your students?: My big priority this fall has been learning students' names and learning what kind of choralmusic speaks to them. My hope is always that the music I choose will "walk" with them beyond the school building, and become a positive and uplifting "soundtrack" to accompany them through their daily lives. Singing in a choir is an activity that highlights the importance of working together toward a common goal, and I hope to instill in each member of the choir that no matter your skill level as a singer, your voice is unique and can contribute to the beautiful, powerful, and meaningful messages our voices carry to one another and to the world.
